Why should I recycle my electronics?

Recycling in general is good practice. As populations grow and resources become more limited, developing a sustainable society becomes increasingly important.

It is even more important to recycle electronics due to the non-biodegradable, and even hazardous, materials used to make them.

Also, in many states, such as Indiana, there are laws that prohibit landfilling electronics.

What are the hazardous materials in electronics?
  • Lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants are common substances of concern used in electronics. While these substances play an important role in the performance for our electronic devices they also present environmental and safety hazards after the devices are discarded.
  • Lead was used for decades in TVs and computer monitors utilizing cathode ray tubes or CRTs. Depending upon age, CRTs can contain as much as seven pounds of lead.
  • Mercury is a common substance used in fluorescent bulbs and can also be found in certain monitors, TVs, and notebooks
  • Brominated flame retardants are widely used to make casing or housing for electronic equipment and sheathing for cables. This is especially true for older products.
  • Cadmium was widely used in Ni-Cad rechargeable batteries for laptops and other portables. Newer batteries (nickel-metal hydride and lithium ion) do not contain cadmium; however, they may pose greater safety risks due to their more reactive chemistry.
  • The EPA provides additional information on the hazards of e-waste and options for recycling https://www.epa.gov/international-cooperation/cleaning-electronic-waste-e-waste
